Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that one in five men will face at some point in their life. 

 

It is about the inconsistent, not predictable achievement of a satisfactory erection, the inability to maintain a satisfactorily hard erection or the total inability to achieve an erection, which prevents penetration and therefore intercourse. 

 

Total inability to achieve an erection, which is treatable at any age, occurs mainly in men over 50 years (4%), 60 years (17%), and 75 years old (47%) and is up to the individualized treatment that the patient will follow, with the instructions of his doctor, to overcome it. 

 

What causes erectile dysfunction? 

 

Erection is achieved by a sequence of physio anatomical events (nerve impulses in the brain, spine, and area around the penis and response in muscles, fibrous tissues, veins in the arteries, and near the cavernous bodies). When any of these events are disrupted or hindered, erectile dysfunction is caused. 

 

Most often, erectile dysfunction is due to a physical cause such as an injury or some medication. However, there are other factors that contribute to its occurrence, which is why a thorough examination of the patient is required to identify the source of the problem. These are: 

 

Various diseases (i.e., diabetes mellitus, hypertension, neurological diseases, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, etc.) coexist with erectile dysfunction, which many times is a symptom of these ailments. 

 

Lifestyle associated with cardiovascular diseases (smoking, alcohol abuse, obesity, sedentary lifestyle). 

 

Some surgical procedures that injure nerves and vessels near the penis but also various injuries (in the penis, prostate, bladder, pelvis). 

 

A series of commonly used drugs (antihypertensive, antihistamines, antidepressants, tranquilizers, appetite inhibitors, cimetidine for stomach ulcer) develops it as a side effect. 

 

Various psychological factors (such as stress, anxiety, depression, and even the fear of sexual failure) aggravate the condition. 

 

Diagnosis and treatment 

 

Having that said, it is obvious that recording the medical and sexual history of a man is imperative, to determine the causes and severity of the problem. The medical record will reveal underlying diseases that cause the dysfunction while, even the description of the patient's sexual life can identify problems related to erection, orgasm, etc. 

 

Furthermore, the physical examination by the doctor can highlight useful data on various organic or hormonal problems, the dysfunction in the patient's circulatory system, but also lead to a psychological evaluation using specialized questionnaires to identify any aggravating psychological factors. 

 

Finally, the multitude of laboratory tests, currently available to science, can determine the reason why a man has decreased sexual desire. 

 

It is comforting that there are many treatment options (pharmaceutical and invasive) which, combined with psychological support, can give a definitive solution of the problem to many patients. 

 

 

How can I improve erectile function? 

 

The desirable improvements to a man's sexual life can be achieved with a holistic new approach to the man's health. 

 

Exercise: adopting a fitness plan with medium intensity exercises can help restore sexual performance, particularly in obese middle-aged men. Even 30 minutes of daily walking reduce by 41% the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, according to a Harvard University study. 

 

Changing eating habits: a diet rich in unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, and fish, reduce the chances of getting erection problems.
